Our community’s favorite beaches in Qingdao

When the weekend comes and the weather’s just right, there’s one question families across our community ask: “Shall we go to the beach?” 

Qingdao isn’t just home to a leading international school—it’s home to a coastline that makes life here something special. Whether you’re new to the city or just looking for a new favorite spot, here are the beaches our international families frequent most. 

1. Shilaoren Beach (Stone Old Man Beach) 

Best for long walks and dramatic views 

Located in Laoshan, this beach is one of the largest in Qingdao and perfect for families who want space to roam. With its soft sand, shallow waters and iconic rock formation, it’s a local favorite for early morning strolls and low-tide sandcastle missions.  

2. No. 1 Bathing Beach 

Best for convenience and classic Qingdao charm 

Right near the heart of Shinan, this is Qingdao’s oldest and most iconic beach. It gets crowded in peak season, but families love its accessibility, historic setting and gentle slope into the sea. Great for quick visits or weekend meetups. 

3. Shi Lao Ren 2nd Beach (Far East / Crowne Plaza area) 

Best for less crowds and beachfront cafés 

Just south of the main Shilaoren strip, this quieter stretch of coast is where many families enjoy a peaceful afternoon with coffee, snacks and sea breeze. It’s walkable from international apartments and less busy, especially on weekdays.  

4. Tangdao Bay Beach (Huangdao) 

Best for a day trip with a view 

If you want to venture to the west side of Qingdao, Tangdao Bay offers a beautiful curved coastline, cycling path and spacious boardwalk. Great for weekend bike rides, kites and sandy picnic setups. 

5. Little Beach at Polar Ocean World 

Best for toddlers and low-key mornings 

Tucked between major attractions, this smaller beach is protected, shaded and easy to access for families with little ones. Parents say it’s a great go-to when you don’t want the hassle of big beach crowds but still want the sea in your day.
