Literacy Week

March 13, 2023

The International School of Qingdao's annual Literacy Week was a huge hit among the elementary and Early Childhood (ECC) kids! Daily dress-up themes taken from Eric Carle books inspired creative and sometimes hilarious costumes. ECC & Elementary Principal for Teaching and Learning, Ms. Kolbe, spent a lot of time considering how to engage our students on the topic of literacy, and showed off her spirit with amazing outfits every day. Every day classes competed to have the largest percentage of participation, making for some creative dress-ups!

In the weeks preceding Literacy Week, students and staff across the school were encouraged to bring books in to participate in a Book Swap. Held on March 7 & 8 and followed by a ¥1 book sale on the 9th, students brought home piles of new reading material! Any leftover books may be donated to the International School of Qingdao's library, ISQ classroom libraries, or other charities in the Qingdao community.

The week was capped off on Friday, with a Spell-A-Palooza for students in Grade 1 – Grade 5.

This friendly team competition helped students show off their collaborative problem-solving, spelling and phonics skills. The G1 students participated in their classroom while the G2/G3 and G4/G5 students will met in the Library to compete. Challenges included three rounds of spelling problems, rhyming and a word search. Congratulations to all of the competitors!

Everyone enjoyed this special week celebrating beloved children’s book author and illustrator, Eric Carle and promoting literacy through costumes, books, reading, and spelling.
