Did you know? English support at all levels in Qingdao

How to help non-native English speaking students thrive in English classes

At the International School of Qingdao, we recognize the pivotal role language plays in education. With 57.5% of our parents prioritizing English learning as a key factor for enrollment, our English Language Support (ELS) program stands as a pillar of commitment to each student’s academic journey.

Our approach begins with bi-annual testing using the WIDA English Language Development assessment, complemented by teacher surveys and MAP test data. This multi-faceted evaluation shapes a learning path that adapts to each student's needs, ensuring a personalized and effective language acquisition experience.

We delve into the heart of language learning by focusing on speaking, reading, writing, and listening. This comprehensive strategy not only enhances academic progress but also equips students with the tools for global communication. Our eight ELS staff members work closely with mainstream teachers to provide relevant content so that students are engaged with meaningful learning as they improve their English.

Varied support for diverse needs

Our ELS program offers a spectrum of support from in-class push-in assistance to pull-out classes to intensive courses. Small group sessions and Cell English classes provide focused environments for students to thrive in their language development. "Can Do" statements from WIDA are useful tools for staff to understand where our students fall within the standards of Language Acquisition, and help ELS teachers and mainstream teachers better plan and individualize lessons.

Gateway to fluency

The ELS program's goal is to foster a deep understanding and confident use of English. Currently, less than 25% of our students participate in ELS, and our school-wide English language ecosystem encourages all students to enhance their fluency. Each semester, students graduate from our ELS program to mainstream classes, where they participate in grade-level coursework with demonstrated proficiency in English.

In the rich, multicultural environment of the International School of Qingdao, our ELS program is more than just an academic offering; it’s a gateway to global understanding and personal growth. Our ELS program perfectly complements our holistic English Language Arts curriculum, preparing students for university and beyond. Join us in nurturing confident, world-ready individuals through the power of language.
