Model United Nations in Qingdao

Since the spring of 2008, the International School of Qingdao has played host to MUNiSQ – a three-day international relations simulation where students take on the roles of UN representatives and debate amongst themselves to develop sustainable solutions to ongoing global matters. For the past few years, like so many other events, MUNiSQ has taken place online. But with the relaxation of Covid restrictions, roughly 150 students from 7 schools gathered at a downtown Qingdao hotel to discuss topics ranging from illicit wildlife trafficking to women's rights to preservation of biodiversity.  

By participating in programs like Model United Nations, International School of Qingdao students develop into globally-minded individuals who are able to consider topics wholly unrelated to their personal experiences. The process of drafting resolutions, presenting to their peers and debating on behalf of their causes helps students develop critical thinking skills as well as interpersonal communication.  

Conference Manager, Leeann G10, shares about her experience preparing for the conference, "As a conference manager...I have learned that it is a very important position to support our leadership team. I was able to learn that there are a bunch of things to prepare for this event and needs a lot of effort and leadership to work in this position." The nine-person leadership team worked for months to prepare for the conference, displaying incredible persistence and cooperation as they overcame obstacles and problem-solved solutions.  

Students expressed how much more they enjoyed the in-person conference compared to online. One of the greatest benefits of MUNiSQ is learning how to work with others, developing greater compassion and connection, and learning how to effectively collaborate with people from different cultures. For many students, MUNiSQ offers them their first opportunity to stand at a podium and speak publicly, where they must also defend their resolutions, displaying discernment and courage.
