Staffing Updates and the Effects of COVID-19

Dear ISQ Parents,

There’s been a hum and buzz around ISQ over the past two weeks as we are all extremely delighted to see both our returning and new staff. Having Lori and Dave French, Ellie Peterson, Steve Malan, Melanie and Glenn Harsch, Carol Franck, Jo Anna Kolbe, Joel Price, Danielle Chua, and Heather Brown all on campus have made the start of this second quarter just in time for parent-teacher conferences quite memorable.

Looking ahead, Noah and Linda Kiekel as well as Davina Miaw will join us on campus next week. The Rooza family, Altmanshofer family, and Lydia Nurse are completing the steps needed to get back to Qingdao as soon as they can.

Many parents from last year will remember Ria McGregor initially hoped to return to her home country over the summer. COVID-19 placed a pause on these plans and we have been grateful to have the McGregor family stay for one more semester at ISQ. They are now looking to return to their home in Trinidad and Tobago at the end of December.

The current personal and family situations for Aries and Katy Gamer as well as the Ehlert family have meant Katy Gamer and Deon Ehlert will continue their teaching from abroad. Mrs. Gamer will finish the school year teaching and leading secondary MUN from the UAE, and Mr. Ehlert and his family will be closely monitoring from South Africa when they can return to Qingdao in the midst of COVID. Students in their classes will continue to receive important in-class support from classroom Hyflex teaching partners here in Qingdao while Mrs. Gamer and Mr. Ehlert deliver valuable lessons and interact with students from abroad.

Though COVID has disturbed much of our lives and community since January, we’re incredibly thankful and humbled that we can see that much of our quarter 1 initiatives for student learning retire as we return to what we all are familiar with. Please continue to keep our staff who are still in the process of returning in mind while joining us in celebrating this good news!

We also thank you, our ISQ parents, for entrusting us with your child’s growth. Look forward to more opportunities to connect and partner with us as we navigate this difficult but great school year!

Fall MAP testing

Dear parents,

This is just a note to let you know that MAP testing is over for the Fall. Well done to all the students for their great effort.
The results for your child’s MAP tests will be available by November 27th (or earlier). Once I have the scores, they will be uploaded to PowerSchool, and you will be able to view them in your PowerSchool account under “DocBox”. You will be informed as soon as they have been uploaded.

Sincerely,
Geetha Bridgeman
MAP Testing Coordinator

PTC overview

Dear parents,

These past 2 days of Parent Teacher Conferences have been a great success, thanks to you, the parents, and the staff working together to make it an enriching experience for all.

Just some facts from the past 2 days: we held over 500 conferences, with about 70% parent participation. 16% of all conferences were Zoom calls from home or work. To help with the different platforms for the conferences, we had 15 staff, parent, and student volunteers who were dedicated to assisting parents and teachers with translating.

Thank you to our ISQ family for being committed to serving our students and children well.
