From the Head of School

Dear ISQ Parents,

As an international community, we have strived to develop globally minded servant leaders who learn, love, and lead. In the midst of rapid change and unpredictability, we have needed to adapt and adjust in what we usually do on and off-campus – academics, fine arts, athletics, activities, counselling, assemblies, meetings, competitions – and we are thankful to our community on how you have adapted and responded to these shifts.

We eagerly look forward to returning to campus and our leadership team and support staff have been diligently making the necessary preparations outlined by the Qingdao Education Bureau and our Virus and Safety Plan. Preparations include purchasing a thermal camera to check students and staff temperatures in groups and amassing hand sanitizer, new policies and procedures in disinfecting, cleaning, hygiene and safety. Our staff have conducted training drills simulating procedures for students and staff once we re-open our campus. We’re also in contact with the Qingdao Education Bureau on nearly a daily basis, reporting ISQ’s progress and quickly cooperating with new directives.

Next School Year

There are multiple uncertainties as we look ahead to the next school year. One thing that is clear is that school will look different, to what extent no one really knows. Regardless of what the near future of learning looks like, one of our goals is to hire quality teachers. Since International Schools Consortium (iSC) began its primary recruitment season months ago, despite the uncertainty of the global outlook we have completed over 25 interviews and have appointed several new staff. Just this month, while the pandemic spread exponentially across the world, our iSC recruiters quickly adapted to the new climate and hosted three digital recruitment conferences for prospective teachers and strategic outreach partners in the USA and UK.

New technology and technical expertise are another goal we are focusing on and preparing for the next school year. One way our teachers, students, and parents can partner together is with our new Learning Management System. Our new LMS, Canvas, is a world leader in helping extend innovative teaching and learning by providing students with user-friendly, interactive learning, and classes with collaborative digital spaces and communications. Canvas LMS will also support and improve distance learning or hybrid learning initiatives in the future if the current epidemic disrupts on-campus learning next year.

For various other unknown or moving scenarios, our school authority, iSC, has begun creating contingency plans to address uncertainties, such as what will learning look like if this pandemic disrupts on-campus learning next school year or what happens if our student body and teachers are still spread across different time zones? In May, the Executive Leadership Team of iSC will bring these contingency plans for all iSC schools to review, provide feedback, and begin implementing. Once these plans are finalized for ISQ, we’ll share them with you.

Re-Enrollment/Withdrawal for Next School Year

Re-enrollment for the next school year will function in two distinct phases. Phase One is for collecting your family’s intent of enrollment or withdrawal for next year and updating information in PowerSchool. This process will be open from today, so feel free to fill out the survey and update your information when you, your company, or both know your family’s decision for next school year. We will not be asking or collecting tuition during this phase. During this phase, we will also be sharing contingency plans and reimbursing unused bus and lunch fees.

After we share our contingency plans for the next school year and reimburse bus and lunch fees, Phase Two will begin for re-enrollment next school year. It is in Phase Two that we will confirm your family’s updated information and share our Tuition and Fees document for families to finalize re-enrollment. While we finalize our payment plans in the Tuition and Fees document, I want to indicate that our tuition will not increase next school year. We understand that there is uncertainty during this season and as a school, and we want to provide as much flexibility as possible through the entire re-enrollment process.

I eagerly look forward to continuing our partnership with our families and serving this outstanding learning community as we return next school year.

Sincerely,

Ben Yap

2020-2021 Re-Enrollment Phase One

Dear ISQ Parents,

As re-enrollment for next school year begins, we want to begin by stressing flexibility in all of it. There are two steps for Phase One, depending on your family’s plan for next school year. You can also view our tentative dates for next year in our 2020-21 Year At a Glance calendar. These dates were created at the beginning of April and are subject to change based on compliance with the Qingdao Education Bureau and our contingency plans.

Step 1 – Intent of Enrollment Survey

Wherever your family currently is – returning to ISQ, still deciding, or leaving Qingdao – please fill out the Intent of Enrollment survey at your earliest convenience. This should take 2-3 minutes to fill out.

Step 2 – PowerSchool Re-Enroll

For families returning next year, please complete PowerSchool Re-Enroll process in your PowerSchool account. This step covers ISQ’s policies, and allows you to update your family’s information. If you intend on having your child ride the bus next year, please select your child’s current bus stop or if you know you will move, select the closest bus stop to your family’s new home address.

The “PowerSchool Re-Enroll Instructions” attachment below is a visual guide on how to navigate PowerSchool’s Re-Enroll process.

Comment from Mrs. Shine Shi: To make a success of HBL, the 10th grade chemistry students have had to develop their self-motivation and good learning habits. Students have watched the provided videos and actively asked questions through email and wechat. They may have been motivated at the beginning of HBL, but now after three months of working online they are still turning in the same high quality work. I am proud of them. They are doing a better job than I did in college ;)

Maintenance Team Preparing Campus for Reopening

Comment from Mrs. Lisa Liu:Since February 20th, the maintenance team has been coming to school every week. The maintenance team have inspected and maintained the whole campus, fixing any problems they have found from the basement to the 5th floor. Together with the air conditioner servicemen, they have regularly and thoroughly disinfected the filters of the central air conditioning system. Our maintenance team have also installed sensor hand sanitizer dispensers, new trash cans with lids, put together the shelter for temperature measurement, and even taken good care of the plants. They have worked hard to prepare our school to make sure we are ready for opening.

Preparing to Re-Open Campus

Safety Drills

ISQ conducted drills in accordance with the Qingdao Education Bureau and our Virus and Safety Plan guidelines recently. Staff were divided into six groups playing the roles of the leaders, temperature monitoring group, medical group, liaison group, student group, and teacher group to practice routine practices once school resumes and other scenarios.

Though we haven’t received a start date, these drills are an important step to re-opening. We still anticipate international schools in Qingdao will resume with a staggered approached, starting with older children first.
