Welcome to ISQ

Dear Parents,

The International School of Qingdao (ISQ) exists to provide holistic world-class education that integrates faith and learning. We offer admission for children from early childhood through high school, and our goal is to prepare our students to realize their full potential: emotionally, physically, spiritually, intellectually, and socially. As we invest in your child, we seek to fully partner with you to cultivate the virtues of strong moral character, a love for academic rigor, and an unwavering leadership based on ethical principles in their life. In our ever complex globalized world, we find that intentional development of the aforementioned qualities are needed to fully prepare individuals to meet the challenges of life and to leave in their wake a worthwhile legacy. My staff and I are committed to joining with you and your family in this exciting journey.

ISQ is the oldest and largest international school in Qingdao. The 2016-2017 school year marks our 21st year of providing holistic education for expatriate children in the city. Through those years, we have seen a steady growth as a school, in student numbers, staff members, programs, and accreditation through the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and the National Center for School Curriculum and Textbook Development Ministry of Education, China (NCCT). We are rapidly approaching 400 enrolled students, and our experienced faculty from all over the world includes over 150 members. ISQ’s longevity and growth results from parents, students, and staff members collaborating together in a values-based environment to create a strong sense of community. We anticipate what the future has in store for us in Qingdao.

ISQ attracts families like you – those who seek rigorous academics, a philosophy of nurturing and developing all aspects of a child, and a welcoming environment. We invite you to visit and discover all the opportunities for your child to grow at ISQ.

Thank you,

Ron Brace

Mission Statement

The International School of Qingdao exists to serve the international families in Qingdao by providing a nurturing, safe, rigorous, and Truth-centered educational experience that is focused on developing the whole student and to professionally support Chinese education.

Vision Statement

The International School of Qingdao will be a center of excellence in education China-wide that provides an innovative environment in which students will meet their full potential in the areas of Character, Academics, and Leadership to positively impact their world.

History

The International School of Qingdao (MTI) is the oldest and most established international school in Qingdao. ISQ began in 1996 as Qingdao MTI International School (QMIS) under the direction of Management Technologies International (MTI) Education Foundation, Inc., an American non-profit corporation committed to educational work in China. ISQ is a member International Schools of China (ISC), a consortium of six schools founded by MTI. ISQ obtained licensing from the Qingdao Education Commission in June of 1996 and the National Education Ministry in September of 1996. ISQ began that fall with eight students ranging from kindergarten through fourth grade.

Since 1996, the number of students at ISQ has grown from 8 to almost 400. As the student body has grown, ISQ has moved school locations three times. Locations include: the back wing of the No. 1 Middle School of High Tech Park (1996-1998); the fourth floor of the Children’s Club at the Qingdao Children’s Activity Center, No. 6 Donghai Road (1998-2007); and the Laoshan Campus that is shared with Baishan School, a private Chinese school (2007-Present). Each move has allowed ISQ to better meet the needs of the student body and school community.

In 2004, MTI merged with Leadership Development International (LDi). In 2010, ISQ officially changed its name and logo from QMIS to the International School of Qingdao (MTI) to better align with the other schools that are a part of ISC.

Who We Are

The International School of Qingdao (ISQ) is proudly the number one school of choice for expatriate families living in Qingdao. We have worked hard to provide world-class education since opening our doors in August of 1996. Though we started out small, our enrollment, programs, and academic reputation have grown steadily as we have served thousands of students throughout the years. We now have an enrollment of almost 400 students from 18 different countries and 150 staff members from 10 different countries. Come join us and be a part of the oldest and largest English-instruction international school in Qingdao.

Our Team

Every teacher we hire must have at least two years teaching experience. All foreign staff must undergo a rigorous application process that includes a background check, psychological exams, eight references, and an interview.

We have 150 staff members from over 10 countries, many of whom grew up in international education settings themselves. Our diversity and passion for world-class education helps us understand and meet the needs of Qingdao’s expat community.

All staff are trained in Emergency First Response and child safety. Our commitment to creating a safe environment for your child ensures that each ISQ student is socially, emotionally, and physically protected while at school.

Our Student Services Department is comprised of 14 staff members who work alongside teaching staff to support the needs of ISQ students.

We are committed to helping our students develop an appreciation for China’s culture and language. Our Chinese Language Department teaches extensive language courses and organizes cultural activities throughout the year.

We love learning. Over 50% of our teaching staff have a master’s degree or higher, and every year, ISQ and our five sister schools offer professional development for each and every staff member.

Expected Schoolwide Learning Results (ESLRs)

The ESLRs are our Expected School-wide Learning Results. They specify target outcomes for students’ physical, intellectual, spiritual, social, and emotional learning. In order for students in all grades to achieve these expected results, teachers, in conjunction with parents and the administration, provide developmental and age-appropriate activities both inside and outside of the classroom.
